 | A big mechanical engineering company needed for a strategical decision regarding their mail system and the redevelopment of critical domino applications to be used with a web interface a comprehensive analysis of all available domino databases.
This analysis was carried out by the use of the tool "CodeGrabber" which is able to scan automatically all accessable applications and analyze / classify them. Two analysis rounds had been carried out to investigate the ability of all applications to run on UNIX (concerning a consolidation of the mark domain for Solaris based servers) and the necessary changes concerning the web interface. In addition the Codegrabber was adapted with a few new functions, got suitable searching criteria and delivered as a result the amount of time per application which was necessary to adapt the applications to be used in the web.
Besides, 27 servers located all over the world with approx. 2000 applications were scanned and analyzed. The next consolidation of the data was carried out by us. Besides, approx. 700 applications which were less relevant were filtered out again. | | These data were categorized to Templates- / Design templates and replicas and were summarized. As a final result a report which contained all relevant parameters like times, number of databases to be changed, etc. was provided. In addition, the report contained lists of applications which are derived from Design-Templates and lists of databases which own replicas on other servers. This makes sense, because these applications represent a classification whre one need to adopt only one database (the Template or a replica). Furthermore this report shows an excellent possibility to receive a total view about the system.
This report and the containing concrete facts brought the managers into the position to meet future decisions with the necessary security concerning resource consumption and costs.
The time consumption from the start of the CodeGrabbers up to completely finished analysis was approximately 14 days and various servers were scanned over 64 kBaud ISDN lines!
A manual analysis would have needed months, beside the costs to for the resources! |
